Essex Vaillant aroTHERM Plus Heat Pump Retrofit
This Bromley Energy heat pump retrofit shows that, with the right design, existing radiators can work efficiently with an air source heat pump.
For this Essex project, Bromley Energy installed a Vaillant aroTHERM plus 7kW heat pump while retaining the existing radiators and underfloor heating. Instead of adding unnecessary buffers or hydraulic separation, the system was redesigned as a single open loop circuit, helping to keep the installation simpler and more efficient.
The system is monitored with real-world performance data and has achieved a measured SCOP of 3.7. It is a strong example of how careful heat loss calculations, pipe sizing, weather compensation and commissioning can make a major difference to heat pump performance.

Heat Pumps vs Boilers
When it comes to heating your home, the two most popular systems today are boilers and heat pumps. Both are designed to keep you warm but they work in very different ways.
If designed and installed correctly, a heat pump is the more eco-friendly option. It runs on electricity and extracts heat from the air (or ground), bringing it indoors to warm your home. Because it moves heat rather than generating it by burning fuel, it’s far more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
A boiler, by contrast, burns fossil fuels to heat water, which is then circulated through your home’s radiators or underfloor heating. While boilers have been a reliable heating option for decades, they do have a higher environmental impact compared to modern heat pump systems.
So which is the better choice? It depends on your home, your priorities, and how the system is designed. For an eco-friendly, energy-efficient solution a heat pump is often ideal. For older or less insulated properties or those with higher heat demand, a boiler may still be the better fit.
At Bromley Energy, we’re here to help you make the right choice. With our in-depth knowledge and Heat Geek accredited expertise, we’ll design the best system for your home so you can enjoy reliable, efficient heating all year round.

FAQ
Heat Pump Installation FAQs
Common questions about ASHP installation, air source heat pumps, grants, surveys and existing radiators for homes in Bromley, North Kent and South East London.
Yes. Bromley Energy installs air source heat pumps across Bromley, North Kent and South East London. We design each ASHP system around your home, heat loss, hot water needs, radiators, insulation and comfort requirements.
ASHP stands for air source heat pump. It uses energy from the outside air to heat your home and hot water. Even when it feels cold outside, an air source heat pump can still collect heat and move it into your heating system.
In many homes, yes. Existing radiators can sometimes work well with a heat pump, but it depends on the design of the system, the size of the radiators, heat loss and required flow temperatures. Bromley Energy will check this properly before recommending the best approach.
The cost of heat pump installation depends on your property, system design, hot water cylinder, radiator requirements, pipework and installation complexity. Bromley Energy can provide a heat pump estimate first, followed by a detailed survey and fixed proposal.
Many homeowners may be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards an air source heat pump installation. Eligibility depends on the property and current heating system. Bromley Energy can help explain the next steps as part of your heat pump enquiry.
Yes. A proper heat pump survey is important because an ASHP needs to be designed around your home, not guessed. The survey helps check heat loss, radiators, pipework, hot water demand, outdoor unit location and overall suitability.
Yes, some older homes can be suitable for heat pumps, but the design needs to be right. Insulation, radiator sizing, pipework and heat loss all matter. Bromley Energy will assess your home before advising whether an air source heat pump is a good fit.
Yes. A correctly designed air source heat pump can provide central heating and hot water. Most systems include a compatible hot water cylinder, controls and weather compensation to help the system run efficiently.
Yes. Bromley Energy is Heat Geek accredited, which means we focus on proper heat pump design, low flow temperatures, efficient system performance and high-quality installation rather than simply replacing a boiler with a heat pump.
A correctly selected and well-positioned air source heat pump should run quietly in day-to-day use. The noise level depends on the model, location, installation quality and how hard the system has to work. Bromley Energy will consider outdoor unit placement carefully during the survey, helping reduce noise impact for your home and neighbours.
